But what if you added dog-fights and hyperdrives? Bingo. And Microsoft Flight Simulator was incredibly frustrating and complex and not all that fun. The only excitement to be had was turbulence and trying to land after you forgot to retract your landing gear when you took off, and then all your wheels broke off your plane once you hit the jet stream because only a moron would fly 500 miles per hour at 20,000 feet and forget to pull their landing gear back in. Microsoft Flight Simulator was just a simulator, not even a game, about flying a commercial aircraft. And then if they did take off, they crashed somewhere miles away from their destination.

I bet a lot of people here have tried to play Microsoft Flight Simulator on their dad’s computer and never even figured out how to take off. Instead of making a dumb ol’ “pew-pew-pew!” dog-fighting game, TIE Fighter took Microsoft Flight Simulator and swapped out the planes and put TIE fighters and Darth Vader in instead. Then when the category is narrowed down to top PC video games of all time, “TIE Fighter” is invariably going to show up in the top five, unless the list-maker is a moron.
